Freshwater Pearls are such an inspiration! Freshwater Pearls naturally occur in pink, peach, lavender, cream, & white. However, Freshwater Pearls can be successfully dyed any color by immersing them in a dye solution. They also come in a wide variety of shapes. The vast majority of Freshwater Pearls are farmed and the shapes are determined by the shapes of the foreign bodies implanted into the oysters. China has been farming Freshwater Pearls since the 13th century and they are currently the only commercial producer. Metaphysically, Freshwater Pearls are associated with purity, wisdom, wealth and prosperity, love, & feminine energy. This can be refined even further with certain colors, shapes, & qualities embodying different properties. White = Romance & Purity Pink = Love & Compassion Black = Prosperity & Wealth Blue = Serenity & Peace Lavender = Tranquility & Wisdom AND Round with High Luster = Harmony & Balance Baroque (Irregularly Shaped) = Individuality & Creativity Round with a Smooth Surface = Calming Effect & Serenity Freshwater Pearl lore is quite varied and stretches across many cultures and time periods. In ancient Japan, folklore spoke of pearls being created from the tears of mythical creatures. Similarly, in ancient Rome, pearls were believed to be the tears of the gods. Ancient Rome also had laws restricting their use to the upper classes. In ancient China, pearls were associated with dragons, where the dragon had to be slain to claim the pearl.
